DEPARTMENT OF ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS
Introduction of the Department
The field of orthodontics, called in the English speaking countries “ORTHODONTIA” during the 19 th century, in France then frequently “Orthopediedentaire”
Orthodontics is the first dental speciality to be started in 1900 by Edward.H.Angle
The area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growing and mature dentofacial structures, including those conditions that require movement of teeth or correction of malrelationships and malformations of related structures by the adjusment of relationships between and among teeth and facial bones by the application of forces and/or stimulation and redirection of functional forces within the craniofacial complex .
Undergraduate during the training in orthodontics should acquire adequate knowledge, necessary skills and reasonable attitudes which are required to diagnose, analyze and treat common orthodontic problems by preventive, interceptive and corrective orthodontic procedures.
The graduate should also understand the concept of community, oral health education and be able to participate in the rural health care delivery programme and should be able to cater to the orthodontic need of the population.
